It's So Not Okay
To...
Our panel of experts tells you how to avoid these lipstick
crimes
...cake on the hue
Coloring over the same spot with a crayon was fun in
kindergarten art class, but doing the same with your
lipstick will only make you look as if your makeup artist is
a 5-year-old. Apply it with a brush, in thin layers. This
allows for a more precise application, especially when
wearing darker shades. And blot: Lightly press a tissue
against your mouth to remove excess pigment.
...have ring around the mouth
Lip liner should never be obvious. Select a shade that's
close to your own natural lip color, not your lipstick, then
lightly pencil in your entire lip to avoid a harsh outline.
...wear a lipstick mustache
Feathering looks good on jeans, not around your lips.
Moisturizing the skin surrounding your mouth, then outlining
with concealer, helps prevent unfashionable color creep.
...color chapped lips
To remove any dead skin on your lips, gently rub them with a
damp washcloth or very soft toothbrush. Next, add a coat of
slick, non-waxy balm; let it absorb before you apply color.
Throughout the day, lightly dab on clear balm or gloss to
keep your mouth moist.
...look like you escaped from Moulin Rouge!
If you're wearing dramatic lipstick, let your mouth do the
talking. Limit the rest of your makeup to a bit of mascara
and blush.
...wear an unflattering shade
This actually is the golden rule. The right lipstick will
look great in daylight, without any other makeup. If you
can't try the color on your mouth, test it on your
fingertips -- they're close in color to your lips. And if
you don't know where to start, look for shades that slightly
exaggerate your real lip color.
...smear lipstick on your teeth
When you're applying color, keep your mouth closed. You
don't need to shade the inside of your lip, and that's how
lipstick gets from the tube onto your teeth. Once the color
is on, pucker your lips and slide your index finger in and
out to remove any lipstick traces on the inside edges. (Yes,
it's as sexual-looking as it sounds, so do it in private.)
